The Watts Towers
📍 Los Angeles, California
“As you wander through the vibrant streets of Los Angeles, the towering mosaics of the Watts Towers rise like a dream from the pavement, their intricate designs whispering stories of hope and resilience. You can almost hear the echoes of Simon Rodia's hands, tirelessly crafting this monumental ode to creativity, inviting you to lose yourself in its elaborate details. Standing beneath the spires, you feel a connection to the countless souls who found beauty in adversity, leaving you inspired and awestruck.”
The Watts Towers are seventeen interconnected structures rising up to 99 feet, hand-built by Italian immigrant Sabato "Simon" Rodia over 33 years using rebar, mortar, and whatever he found — broken tiles, sea shells, glass bottles, ceramic fragments. Rodia never explained his creation, deeded the property to a neighbor in 1954, and left forever. They stand as one of the greatest works of outsider art ever made.
