Newfound Gap straddles the Tennessee-North Carolina border atop the Great Smoky Mountains at 5,046 feet. The stone Rockefeller Memorial marks where FDR dedicated the park in 1940. On clear days the view stretches 100 miles across blue-hazy ridges; on misty mornings, clouds drift through the spruce-fir forest at eye level. The Appalachian Trail crosses here.
