Winchester Mystery House
📍 San Jose, California
“As you wander through the labyrinthine halls of the Winchester Mystery House, every door you open reveals a new enigma, each room a whisper of the past. The towering staircases lead to nowhere, and the secret passages beckon you to uncover the stories hidden within the walls, as if the spirit of Sarah Winchester herself guides your journey. You can't shake the feeling that time flows differently here, in a place where the line between the living and the restless is delightfully blurred.”
Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune, believed she was haunted by the victims of Winchester guns. Beginning in 1884, she directed construction of her San Jose mansion continuously for 38 years, 24 hours a day. The result: 160 rooms, stairs that lead into ceilings, doors that open onto walls, and windows built into floors. Construction stopped the moment she died in 1922.
