Palouse Falls in eastern Washington drops 198 feet into a volcanic basalt bowl scoured by the Missoula Floods at the end of the last Ice Age. The surrounding coulees — dry canyon channels — tell a geological story of apocalyptic scale. Washington's official state waterfall, it's best photographed from the canyon rim at sunset when the basalt glows amber.
