Artist's Drive is a one-way, 9-mile loop through the Black Mountains in Death Valley National Park, passing the famous Artist's Palette — a hillside painted in shades of pink, yellow, green, purple, and blue by oxidized metals in the volcanic rock. Greens come from mica, yellows from sulfur compounds, reds from iron oxide. Best visited in late afternoon when the colors ignite.
